How Health Monitor is built
Health Monitor is maintained by the Foundation for Research in Health Systems. It brings together published Government of India statistics for states and union territories so they can be compared without re-keying numbers out of PDFs.
What is in it
Ten themes, from population and fertility through to health infrastructure. Each theme holds a set of tables; each table holds one or more indicators, and each indicator carries its own unit, source and reference year. Currently published: 10 tables covering 111 indicators.
Where the numbers come from
Figures are reproduced as published, without adjustment, from the Census of India, the Sample Registration System, the National Family Health Survey, the Health Management Information System, the Local Government Directory and the Technical Group on Population Projections. Each table page lists the exact document and page number behind every column.
Where a source and Health Monitor disagree, the source is right; tell us and we will correct it.
How missing values are handled
Sources use several conventions for "no value", and Health Monitor keeps them apart rather than flattening them to a blank cell:
- NA: the source reports the indicator but not for this geography.
- NN: not notified.
- n/a: the state or union territory did not exist at that date. Telangana was constituted in 2014 and Ladakh in 2019; the source files store these as zero, which would otherwise sink every ranking and darken every map. Health Monitor treats them as "not applicable" and leaves them out of averages, rankings and charts.
Reuse and citation
Every table can be downloaded as CSV or JSON, and every page carries a citation line. Attribution to Foundation for Research in Health Systems and to the original source is expected.
